Wide-Ranging Effects of Gender Discrimination
Some forms of discrimination result in a so-called "glass ceiling" in many workplaces. Women and openly gay men find it difficult to rise above a certain level of influence, responsibility or compensation, despite their skill, experience and qualifications.
Often, this discrimination is not rooted in outright bigotry. Instead, it can be the subtle, unconscious tendency that nearly all people — upper-level management included — have for favoring individuals similar to themselves. Rooted in primal, tribalistic instincts, this tendency must be overridden in the workplace by conscious will. When it is not, discrimination is the result and concerted legal action is the necessary resort.
Gender Discrimination Works in Both Directions!
In most cases, gender discrimination occurs when someone in power expresses a preference for members of his or her own gender. Historically, men have discriminated against women. While it is still much less common, in some situations we have begun to see women discriminating against men.
In addition, men can discriminate against other men, and women can discriminate against other women. It does not matter who is discriminating against whom: if the discrimination is based upon gender or sexual orientation, it is illegal!
