Teaneck, New Jersey Whistleblower Lawyers

At Rabner Baumgart Ben-Asher & Nirenberg, P.C. our New Jersey whistleblower lawyers represent employees and residents of Teaneck and throughout the rest of New Jersey. For example, we have represented several former members of the Teaneck Fire Department, including a firefighter who experienced severe workplace harassment and retaliation when he blew the whistle about various policies and practices of the Fire Department. We were able to settle his retaliation and civil rights lawsuit for more than three million dollars.

Employment Lawyers Protecting Whistleblowers in New Jersey and New York

Whistleblowers are employees who are brave enough to speak out on behalf of their coworkers and fellow citizens even though they put their own safety and careers in jeopardy by doing so. They typically identify problems or injustices in the workplace, and make them known to their employers, their coworkers or the government. Unfortunately, instead of being thanked for their efforts, whistleblowers often end up experiencing retaliation from their employers, such as being fired, demoted or harassed.

Our society needs whistleblowers to help identify violations of the law and other problems in the workplace. As a result, many laws protect whistleblowers from retaliation.

For example, New Jersey has a very broad whistleblower law, the Conscientious Employee Protection Act ("CEPA"). Among other things, CEPA protects employees who object to or refuse to participate in activities they reasonably believe are unlawful, fraudulent, criminal, or violate a clear mandate of public policy relating to public health, safety, welfare or the environment.

Other state and federal laws in both New Jersey and New York prohibit retaliation. For example, this includes the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA"), the Family & Medical Leave Act ("FMLA"), the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination ("LAD"), and the New York Human Rights Law ("NYHRL").

New York also has a fairly expansive whistleblower law of its own. To learn more about it, please see the article, New York State Finally Enacts Broad Whistleblower Law, which was written by one of our New York and New Jersey whistleblower attorneys.
