How to Negotiate a Better Severance Agreement

Severance Agreements and Severance Negotiations

An employer is not required to have a severance pay policy, but your employment contract or company policy may define severance benefits that your employer will provide for you. If you have been fired, laid off or downsized, you may be entitled to severance pay under your company’s policy or practice, or under your individual employment contract.

Even if your employer does not have a severance plan, it still may be possible to negotiate severance pay. If you have already been offered severance pay, it might be possible to improve the offer or modify its terms.

If you have lost your job, contact the employment law specialists at Resnick Nirenberg & Cash to see if they can help you obtain a severance offer, review the severance package you have been offered or negotiate a better severance package for you. We may be able to increase the amount of money you receive or add benefits such as outplacement services, extended medical benefits or insurance or a better recommendation to help you find your next job.

In addition, our attorneys are experienced at reviewing severance agreements to help protect your rights and interests. We can explain the terms of your severance offer, identify unreasonable or unfair provisions and try to convince your company to correct, improve or modify them.

At Resnick Nirenberg & Cash, our attorneys are here to protect your interests in the employment market. Contact our office to speak with an attorney at our New York or New Jersey locations.
