A hostile work environment is another name for harassment. It occurs when your employer has made your working conditions so intolerable that it has, in effect, changed the terms and conditions of your employment. A hostile work environment is legally actionable when (1) it is motivated by an unlawful factor, such as one of the forms of discrimination and retaliation listed above and (2) it is either sufficiently severe (bad) or pervasive (frequent).
